Enabling Java

Java is a programming language developed by Sun Microsystems that is often used to deliver enhanced functionality on web sites. Certain features on the InvestorForce site, particularly those within the Altvest hedge fund database, use Java applets to deliver such functionality and offer a more intuitive user experience.

Due to litigation between Microsoft and Sun concerning ownership and rights to the Java language, and the resulting settlement, Microsoft is permitted to distribute security patches to its version of Java (the Microsoft virtual machine, or VM), but is not permitted to distribute the VM itself to systems that do not have it installed. The Microsoft VM is not completely compatible with Sun's version of Java. The applets on the InvestorForce site require the Microsoft VM to function correctly.

To enable Java in Internet Explorer, follow these steps:

  1. Within the browser, choose Tools | Internet Options | Advanced. All options under Microsoft VM should be enabled.
  2. If Microsoft VM is not listed as one of the options, you will need to install it. Please note that the following two steps are both required, as the latest version of the Microsoft VM cannot be installed by itself:
    1. Download and install Microsoft VM version 3805.
    2. Download and install Microsoft VM version 3810, or use Windows Update to obtain this update directly from Microsoft.
  3. If you have a version of Sun's Java virtual machine installed, perform the following steps to disable it:
    1. Within the browser, choose Tools | Internet Options | Advanced.
    2. Find the Java (Sun) item and uncheck the checkbox that says Use Java 2 v 1.4.x for applet (requires restart).
    3. Save your changes by clicking the OK button.
    4. Close all browser sessions and restart your browser.

Please note that applets requiring Java 2 or the Sun Java virtual machine will no longer function if Sun Java is disabled. You may have both the Microsoft and Sun virtual machines installed, but only one can be active at a time within Internet Explorer.
